Are raccoons in your chimney in Collierville, TN? Raccoons are one of the animals most commonly found in chimneys. Chimney are similar to hollow trees which are a favorite spot for mother raccoons to set up their nursery. There can be a small family of raccoons or even a single bachelor. Raccoons are extremely good climbers that can easily climb onto your roof and into that nice warm, safe chimney.

When Do Raccoons Have Babies?
The raccoon breeding season typically starts around December. Raccoons will have three to five babies or kits in the Spring. This is time when you may start to hear baby raccoons crying.

DON’T Do This If You Have Baby Raccoons In Your Chimney In Collierville TN!
During the day a mother raccoon may leave her babies to go outside in the search for food and water. The babies usually sleep all day so you may not realize that the babies are still in the chimney. NEVER seal or cap your chimney unless you are sure the baby raccoons are no longer in the chimney. If you seal your chimney with the babies still inside, the mother may tear your home apart. You may hear the babies crying. If the mother is unable to get to them, the babies will eventually die.

Never, EVER Use Fire!
Some people assume that since the animal was able to get into the chimney, it can get out. Never, EVER build a fire or turn on a gas fireplace in an effort to chase raccoons from a chimney! This is extremely inhumane. The babies would burn to death along with their mother who would do everything she could to save them. If you think you have raccoons in your chimney, keep the damper tightly closed. You never know if the raccoons have nested on top of the damper. Opening the damper could dump a terrified raccoon right into your living room!

How We Can Help
Our wildlife technicians will first perform an interior and exterior inspection of your home. At this time, they will ask specific questions about the condition of your home. For instance, do you think the raccoons might also have access to the attic? What time of day are you hearing the most activity? Information about the types of noises you hear will also help with species identification. Depending on the species, some are more active than others at certain times of the day or night. The technician will listen to the chimney from the inside of your home to locate the position of the raccoons. He will then go into the attic to check for any signs that raccoons have been in the attic. He is looking for fecal droppings, chewed wires, and HVAC damage. Once all the interior findings are noted, the technician then performs the exterior inspection. He will theninspect your chimney from top to bottom for possible entry points. This could be a missing brick, a gap in the foundation. You may simply need a chimney cap over the top of the chimney which is a quick and easy fix. Once our technician has assessed all the entry points, he will provide you with a quote to repair the area.

How We Trap Raccoons
The trapping service will vary depending upon whether or not there are baby raccoons present inside the chimney. If so, we use an eviction fluid. This fluid gives off a smell that triggers a biological response in the mother to protect her babies. It may take a couple of days, but eventually the mother raccoon will move her babies to another area. This will keep everyone safe and provides the best way for the babies to survive. Trapping the mother raccoon and babies together could cause the mother could become stressed. She could end up attacking her own young. And she could even reject her babies if they are in separate cages.
If no baby raccoons are in the chimney, we will place an excluder trap over the main entry point. We will then seal all the other points of entry where the raccoons could get in or out. The raccoons will have to go into the excluder trap if they want to get out.
We will relocate raccoons 25 miles away so they are not able to find their way back to your home. When all the wildlife has been removed we we will seal up the last entry point. Once this sealing process is complete, you should once again have a quiet, raccoon-free home.
