Rats are nocturnal creatures and usually make their presence known in the middle of the night.  That’s not to say that they won’t come out looking for food or water during the day.  But often they are so quiet that homeowners don’t know they have rats until they see certain evidence.

Droppings are the most obvious sign of rats or mice.  Rat droppings are shaped like a dark grain of rice, but larger.  Mouse droppings look like small dark pellets.  You may also want to check for any chewed areas in the more secluded, dark areas of your home such as cabinets, closets and, of course, your attic.  Squeaking and running noises overhead and in your walls are another sure sign of wildlife that does not belong in your home.
