We are often asked why rats are under a house. There are several reasons why they do so. First, rats are drawn to the warmth and protection offered by the crawlspace or foundation of a house, especially during colder months. It provides them with a safe haven from harsh weather conditions and security from predators. Also, food sources around or inside the  house are a significant attraction for rats. Rodents are opportunistic feeders and will seek out accessible food, including pet food, garbage, or improperly stored pantry items. Rats are especially skilled at sniffing out entry points into homes, exploiting the smallest openings in the foundation or walls. Once inside, they begin to explore further and end up under the house. Rats are secretive animals. The concealed spaces under houses offer them a sense of security. This makes it challenging for homeowners to detect them until an infestation becomes noticeable.
