Of course, you don’t often see skunks out during the day.  These nocturnal animals and most active at night. If food is scarce or if its mating season, skunks will need to venture out during the day. Other than during mating season, skunks spend most of their time alone.

Skunk Trapping In Memphis - Skunk Diseases

Rabies is probably the greatest threat to humans and animals from a skunk bite. While not all skunks are rabid, they are among the top transmitters of the disease in North America.  Skunks can also transmit distemper to dogs, which can be deadly.  Skunks also carry hepatitis and tularemia which can be transmitted through bites or scratches.

Skunk feces contains roundworms, and exposure to their urine can cause Leptospirosis. This is a bacterial infection that can produce flu-like symptoms such as high fevers, muscle pain, and headaches.

Skunk Removal In Memphis TN - Baby Skunks

Baby skunks are among the most adorable wildlife babies you will ever see, but they are also the stinkiest!  A baby skunk does not have the control an adult skunk has and will spray without warning, but at least their spray isn’t as strong.

Baby skunks are born in springtime, and are usually mature enough to be on their own by fall.  At first, these babies will sleep in their den all day as the mother skunk goes out to forage.  At six weeks old, the babies will start venturing out of the den with their mother to learn survival skills such as digging for grubs and recognizing dangers.  Mother skunks are extremely protective of their young, so you will want to keep a safe distance from these little families.

Skunk Trapping In Memphis TN - That Terrible Smell!

When a skunk senses danger, it can raise its tail and release its stinky spray from the glands underneath. Skunks can accurately hit a target from about 10 feet away!  But keep in mind that skunks will give a warning before they spray.  They will stomp their front feet which actually looks really cute until you get a face full of spray!

What makes a skunk’s spray stink? It’s made up of oily sulphur compounds that can cause headaches and burning or stinging in the eyes. A skunk’s spray has been described as a combination of rotten eggs, garlic and burnt rubber. Phew!
