That’s okay – we think its gross, too!
Unfortunately, squirrels are not exactly potty-trained so they go when and where they please. And if they are nesting in your attic, they will take advantage of your soft and absorbent insulation to do their business. Over time, your insulation can become so saturated with urine and feces that it cannot be salvaged. We have seen attics with so much squirrel, rat or raccoon feces that only a full (and very expensive!) attic restoration could get rid of the horrible smell.
If you have seen or heard signs of squirrels in your attic, don’t hesitate to nip this problem in the bud. The longer you wait, the worse this stinky problem will become!
Squirrels are the magicians of the animal world. You would be amazed at all the different areas of your home that these cute little pests can chew their way into. Those sharp teeth and claws are hard at work every day, tearing their way through soffits, vents, screens, construction gaps, and even your shingles to find a safe shelter. Are they fast? Let’s put it this way; squirrels don’t have a job to go to, no hobbies… nothing to do but work on getting into your attic. And these animals are PERSISTENT!
Once inside, squirrels will create even more mayhem leading to water and structural damage, fire hazards, and bringing with them ticks, fleas and mites. How nice of them!
So here you are with an attic full of squirrel pee and poop. Eventually all of this is going to dry and crumble into dust. As squirrels move around, they will stir up the poop-dust which will end up in your ventilation and blowing throughout your home. That’s right, you will end up with a light dusting of finely ground squirrel poop all over everything in your home. We are talking furniture, clothing, dishes, food, bedding, even your skin and hair. EVERYTHING, folks.
This can happen so gradually that at first you won’t realize why your family keeps getting sick and having respiratory issues. After all, everyone gets a cold sometimes. But nobody needs the kind of severe bacteria and fungus that squirrel feces and urine contain. This is the kind of thing that will eventually land you in a hospital, or worse. Keep reading below to learn about these nasty, infectious diseases.
Leptospirosis: This bacterial infection can be contracted by coming into contact with water or soil contaminated with squirrel urine. Symptoms can range from mild flu-like symptoms to severe illness.
Salmonellosis: Squirrels can carry Salmonella bacteria, which can be transmitted to humans through the ingestion of food or water contaminated by squirrel feces. Symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever.
Histoplasmosis: The fungus Histoplasma capsulatum, found in soil enriched with squirrel droppings, can cause respiratory illness when spores become airborne during cleanup or renovation activities.
If you suspect squirrels in your attic, please get your family checked out by a physician and then nip this nasty problem in the bud immediately.
